Flash elements on websites

Flash is a wonderful tool to use when designing your website. It is very effective in adding graphics and interactivity to any website. The truth is that there is so much competition out there for attention from billions of websites and flash elements will help a great deal and make it much more difficult for folks to ignore your website, or quickly hit the back button and get out of your site in a hurry.

However it is extremely important for you to understand all the pros and cons of using flash in the design of your site. It is also critical for you to know where to use it and where not to use it. Liberal use of flash without this knowledge will without doubt land you into trouble.

The biggest problem with flash is that it will slow down the speed at which visitors are able to load your site. This can affect your traffic and conversions on your site a great deal. Then there is the fact that search engine robots generally have trouble navigating flash sites. And so it is hardly surprising that flash sites never rank well with leading search engines like Google. This means that they usually end up losing tons of possible targeted traffic.

Then there is the fact that people need a plug in to be able to view a flash site. Most people are not willing to accept this plug in.

But this does not mean that you cannot use flash sensibly and still meet your objectives while giving your website a great look. Every problem has a solution and there are ways of conquering the drawbacks in the use of flash elements. There are flash sites that still attract lots of traffic from search engines and the way they do it is by having two versions of the site: one in HTML and the other in flash. They then find an effective way for the two versions to interact for users.

There is no denying the fact that flash is ideal for animation. Actually it was originally created exactly for this and that is why it is so easy to create animations and view them with flash. Video also works wonderfully well with flash.

Flash applications can also be very useful in a lot of other areas. For instance they can collect data, perform script actions and do many things that server side scripts do.

What you will need to do is to b careful to use flash where it is effective. It may not be a good idea to use flash on your entire site. Use it in select situations and make it god so that it adds to the attractiveness of your site and gives your visitors something that will stick in their minds and help them remember you.

And most importantly never use flash for navigation, no matter how tempting it is to do so. Just remember that navigation is key on your website and apart from the search engine issues. Any visitor who lands on your site and cannot use your navigation for any reason will leave and never return.

Do use flash wisely and carefully to enhance the experience on your site and never get carried away by what it can do.
